Anxiety is often experienced by autistic people and can be overlooked in those who have a diagnosis of an intellectual disability and speak few or no words. This talk will discuss why anxiety is overlooked, discuss ways to spot the behavioural signs of anxiety, and describe what we have learnt from developing interventions to reduce anxiety in autistic children who speak few or no words. It will also consider anxiety and the family system. The webinar is aimed at a wide audience including parents, support workers, researchers, clinicians, and educators. At the end of the webinar, we will launch a toolkit of resources for clinicians and parents to access online.

In this webinar, we will be joined by Dr Jane Waite, Senior Lecturer and Clinical Psychologist from Aston University whose research focuses on improving the identification of anxiety, and subsequent support, in autistic individuals who have a diagnosis of an intellectual disability; and Dr Jo Tarver, Dr Effie Pearson, Jess Mingins and Jess Hughes, who work as part of the Aston based research team driving forward the research in this area. The team have received research funding from Autistica, Cerebra and Aston University.

Hello,

Thank you for attending the webinar earlier this week about anxiety in autistic people who speak few or no words.

You can watch the webinar back on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fv1FsiM2PLM

Key resources from the webinar include the following: The LADDERS website offers a link to the Aston University team's YouTube channel, which features concise videos summarising the webinar's content. Additionally, you can download a recently developed Anxiety Guide from the website. If you're a clinician, there is also a link available to request a copy of the manual for a newly created anxiety assessment specifically designed for autistic children who speak few or no words.

Find out more: www.laddersproject.co.uk/anxiety-and-autism-1

Could you spare five minutes to answer six short questions about the webinar to help the research team know whether it had an impact? The Aston University research team are collecting feedback on the content of the Webinar to learn about whether it met the needs of the audience who attended and whether attendance at the webinar is likely to have an impact on people's lives and practice. To complete the feedback survey, follow this link: https://astonpsychology.eu.qualtrics.co ... IZBXQMmujA

Additional Resources. A number of additional resources were discussed during the webinar and can be found in the slides for the final talk. However, the Be-Well Checklist (https://cerebra.org.uk/research/the-be-well-checklist/) may be particularly useful for parents, clinicians and educators to access. This is a checklist to rule out factors contributing to behaviours that challeng e in people with learning disabilities that speak few or no words.

Get involved in co-research. Opportunities to get involved in co-research were discussed during the webinar. You can register an interest here: https://astonpsychology.eu.qualtrics.co ... E?Q_CHL=qr

Many thanks,

The Autistica Team
